Yesterday I spent the afternoon with one of my dearest friends, Jessica. I really can’t believe I’ve only known her for under a year and a half, because our friendship feels like one those we’ve had for a lifetime.
Jess values authenticity and strives to truly LIVE in each moment of her life consciously. She is unabashedly herself and that type of honesty & vulnerability is contagious. Whenever we’re together I feel more aware of my surroundings… the taste of a mimosa, the sound of the rain, the look of the light streaming through the window, the smell of the city, the lyrics to a song… all of it.
After I left her place yesterday I was thinking a lot about living an authentic life and how important it is to every aspect of your life… your relationships, your career, your happiness… and yet, so many people don’t do it. We pretend to be someone we’re not. We build walls and create facades about ourselves and our lives. We run from who we are and ignore truths about ourselves. We post only the pretty and the “perfect” on social media and hide behind screens. But for what?
I love that I have friends who remind me of these things and leave me thinking about life, and how I can better live mine after spending time with them.
“Why, when we know that there’s no such thing as perfect, do most of us spend an incredible amount of time and energy trying to be everything to everyone? Is it that we really admire perfection? No – the truth is that we are actually drawn to people who are real and down-to-earth. We love authenticity and we know that life is messy and imperfect.” Brené Brown
Here’s to living an authentic life and to friends who bring the best out in us. xoxo
